Sens. Vehle, Van Gerpen file for re-election bids

State Sen. Mike Vehle, R-Mitchell, has filed for re-election in District 20 to run for another two-year term in the Senate.

Representing Aurora, Davison and Jerauld counties, Vehle filed for the position March 10 and is the first candidate to file in District 20 for Senate. Vehle is running for the fourth time in the Senate. The primary election will be held June 3 and the deadline for candidates to file is March 25.

Vehle currently serves as the chair of the Senate Transportation committee and is a member of the Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources and Judiciary committees. He served in the state House of Representatives from 2004 to 2008 and has been a member of the Senate since 2009. Sen. Bill Van Gerpen, R-Tyndall, also has filed for re-election, running in District 19 to represent part of Bon Homme and all of Douglas, Hanson, Hutchinson and McCook counties. Van Gerpen will run for his second term in the Senate after winning his seat in 2013. His petition was fi led Wednesday with the Secretary of State’s office. He previously had three separate stints in the House over an eight-year span. Van Gerpen serves as a member on the Senate Appropriations committee.
