SIOUX FALLS (AP) -- A South Dakota state senator says the state could reap millions in beef exports if Taiwan votes soon to lift an import ban on U.S. beef.

Republican Shantel Krebs recently traveled to China and Taiwan as part of a trade and goodwill mission. She is chairwoman of the South Dakota Senate's Agriculture Committee.

She says Taiwan's congress will be deciding soon whether to end a U.S. beef ban.

It was imposed because of the livestock industry's use of a feed additive that promotes leaner beef and pork.

Krebs says she emphasized that American beef is safe and there's great consumer demand for it.

The media reports that South Dakota had $3.2 billion in farm exports two years ago. That ranked South Dakota 12th among states.
