SIOUX FALLS (AP) -- U.S. Sen. Tim Johnson has given $70,000 to the South Dakota Democratic Party to help with the party's campaign efforts.

Johnson's donation was reported in the party's August campaign report filed with the Federal Election Commission.

There is no limit on how much money federal candidates can give to state and national political parties, and the $70,000 gift is the largest Johnson has given to the party in the past decade.

Johnson's staff says the senator is trying to support his party. Drey Samuelson, Johnson's chief of staff, says the senator has given the South Dakota Democratic Party campaign funds from time to time.

Johnson's term expires in two years, but he has not announced whether he will seek a fourth term in the Senate.
