SDSU looking to bounce back against Salukis
After falling to rival North Dakota State University in the Dakota Marker football game last week, South Dakota State is looking to rebound.
The Jackrabbits will get that chance Saturday as they take on Southern Illinois at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium in Brookings.
The last time the Missouri Valley Conference foes faced off, SDSU came away with a narrow 16-12 victory.
In that game, Austin Sumner threw a 5-yard pass to Trevor Tiefenthaler with just seven seconds on the clock to win the game.
This year, Southern Illinois (2-3) is led by quarterback Kory Faulkner and wide receiver Mycole Pruitt. Faulkner has thrown for 1,290 yards and 14 touchdowns. His main target Pruitt has brought in 28 catches for 368 yards and four touchdowns.
The Jackrabbits (2-3) are led by Sumner and running back Zack Zenner. In five games, Zenner has rushed for 746 yards and 10 touchdowns. Zenner also averages 149.2 rushing yards per game. Sumner has thrown for 1,064 yards and five touchdowns this season.
South Dakota (1-3) vs. Missouri State (1-4), 2 p.m. Saturday in Vermillion VERMILLION — The University of South Dakota Coyotes will try to end its streak of three straight losses Saturday as they take on the Southwest Missouri State University Bears at the DakotaDome.
The teams played last season in Springfield, Mo., when Missouri State eked out a 27-24 victory over the Coyotes.
Leading the way for the Coyotes is quarterback Josh Vander Maten.
In four games, Vander Maten has thrown for 384 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 224 yards and three touchdowns.
The Bears are led by a three-head rushing attack of running backs Vernon Scott, Mikael Cooper-Falls and quarterback Kierra Harris. All three have rushed for more than 200 yards and Harris has also thrown for 829 yards.
Northern State (1-3) vs. Minnesota State-Moorhead (0-4), 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Aberdeen
ABERDEEN — The Northern State football team is looking to stop its three-game skid Saturday against Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival Minnesota State-Moorhead.
Northern won last year’s meeting 45-7 with the Wolves’ defense recording two interceptions and seven sacks.
Saturday, the Northern defense will be led by defensive back Blaine Schmidt, who has recorded 29 tackles and one interception this season. Leading the way for the Northern offense is quarterback Jared Jacobson. In four games, Jacobson has thrown for 735 yards and seven touchdowns, while rushing for 188 yards and three touchdowns.
Minnesota State-Moorhead is led by quarterback Jake Hodge, who has thrown for 558 yards and run for 243 yards.
Augustana (2-2) vs. Wayne State (1-3), 1 p.m. Saturday in Sioux Falls SIOUX FALLS — The Augustana Vikings are looking to rebound from last week’s loss to St. Cloud State when they play Wayne State Saturday.
Wayne State won 31-27 against the Vikings in last year’s contest.
Running backs Dajon Newell and C.J. Ham and quarterback Trey Heid each have over 100 yards rushing for Augustana.
Justin Brown leads the Viking defense with 16 tackles and two interceptions.
Wayne State is led by Charlie Davidson. In four games, Davidson has rushed for 527 yards and five touchdowns.
Sioux Falls (2-2) vs. Southwest Minnesota State University (2-2), 6 p.m. Saturday in Marshall, Minn. MARSHALL, Minn. — For the third time this season, the University of Sioux Falls will play on the road. The Cougars have dropped their two previous road games and will look to get the first road win of the season against Southwest Minnesota State University in an NSIC matchup.
Last year, USF beat the Mustangs 41-22.
USF is led by quarterback Luke Papillion, who has thrown for 452 yards and rushed for 387 yards.
Tyler Tonderum leads the way for SMSU. The running back has rushed for 785 yards and 10 touchdowns in four games.
Presentation College (3-1) vs. Valley City State University (3-1), 1 p.m. Saturday in Valley City, N.D. VALLEY CITY, N.D. — The Presentation College football team is in search of its fourth victory of the season Saturday when it takes on Valley City State.
Saturday’s contest is the first-ever meeting.
Presentation is led by quarterback Stephen Braswell. In four games, Braswell has thrown for 745 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Derek Elliott has 727 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground to lead the way for Valley City State University.
Black Hills State University (0-4) vs. Western State (0-4) 1 p.m. MST Saturday in Spearfish SPEARFISH — Black Hills State University looks to get its first win of the season Saturday when it takes on Western State.
The teams met on the gridiron last year when BHSU won the game 21-7.
Anderson Ward leads the way for BHSU. The junior quarterback has thrown for 1,003 yards and seven touchdowns in four games.
Western State is led by running back Austin Ekeler, who has run for 441 yards.
