PIERRE (AP) — After hours of discussion, a South Dakota Senate committee has delayed a vote on a bill that would relax regulations on raw milk production and sales.

The Health and Human Services Committee voted 5-2 to delay the measure for two weeks to give opposing sides a chance to seek compromise.

The bill would repeal regulations set by the state Department of Agriculture.

Supporters say the bill would provide reasonable regulations for the small operations that produce raw milk. The proposed measure, for example, would allow distribution of cream made from raw milk, which is currently banned.

Many supporters say raw milk has important health benefits.

The measure's critics say existing regulations are reasonable and necessary for public safety. The secretaries of the state's health and agriculture departments oppose the bill.
