SD Select team surprising coaches in San Diego

Jim Misiaszek wanted his team to be competitive this week at the Triple Crown World Series in San Diego, Calif.

So far, he hasn't been disappointed.

There are 120 teams in the 16U division at the tournament. The Select went 3-1 against teams from Southern California and Phoenix over the first two days of pool play. The Select, which won its pool, advanced to the Gold Championship double elimination tournament, which begins today. Forty-eight of the 120 teams advanced to the top-tier bracket play.

Select opens against Southern California Dream at 8 a.m. today.

Misiaszek coaches the South Dakota Select, which is a 16U fastpitch softball team including four players from Mitchell -- Haylee Schoenfelder, Jayci Hinker, Andrea Konz, Hallie Misiaszek.

"I have taken teams to big events like this in Colorado and we felt that with this team, we could play this tournament," said Misiaszek, who coaches the Mitchell High School fastpitch team in the fall and is an assistant coach for Dakota Wesleyan University. "My goal was to put together a showcase team that could be exposed to college coaches, whether it's Dakota Wesleyan or not.

"Every single one of these players wants to play college ball somewhere."

The Triple Crown World Series began Tuesday and continues through Saturday.
