SD National Guard prepares to transfer armories
PIERRE — Webster and Watertown should get ownership of old National Guard armory complexes in the two northeastern South Dakota cities, a state Senate panel agreed Wednesday.
The two bills, HB 1126 and HB 1127, won approval from the Senate State Affairs Committee and were placed on the Senate consent calendar for possible final passage today. The measures received House unanimous approval last week.
The National Guard moved from the Webster armory after the new Watertown armory came into use last summer, according to South Dakota National Guard Adj. Gen. Tim Reisch.
He said the Webster armory was built in 1956 as part of a joint venture. The city government contributed $160,000, the school district gave $30,000 and the National Guard provided $95,000.
