PIERRE (AP) — A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service conservation order is allowing hunters to shoot snow geese this spring.

The annual snow goose migration is underway and the federal agency is allowing states to help control the species’ population and prevent further habitat degradation.

The conservation order in South Dakota runs from Feb. 15 through May 4, 2014. It’s specific to snow and blue geese as well as Ross’ geese. Other waterfowl may not be taken.

Hunting is allowed statewide with no limit on the number of snow geese that may be taken.

Hunters are required to have a valid hunting license, but the federal waterfowl stamp is not required. Nontoxic shot is required.
