SC/W junior Selland commits to Augustana
Sanborn Central/Woonsocket junior Shelby Selland verbally committed to NCAA D-II Augustana Thursday.
The center is the first SC/W player to commit to play college basketball since Sanborn Central and Woonsocket began its cooperative before last season.
"I always wanted to play college basketball," she said. "I didn't know what level, but I knew I wanted to play. I really like Augustana. They have a really strong program and I really like their system."
Selland is averaging 17 points and eight rebounds this season and chose Augustana over the University of Sioux Falls and Northern State. Selland's performance in the post this season has helped lead the Blackhawks to a 19-1 record and a No. 1 seed in the District 12B tournament.
"We are very excited for her and she is a very deserving young lady," SC/W co-head coach Rob Baruth said. "She puts in a ton of time in the gym and I think it is a pretty good fit for her at Augustana. "I think it's a credit to all the girls when you get a girl like Shelby and she gets recruited to college. It's not just a one-girl deal, because all the girls are working to become a better team."
