Scotland Highlander track teams send more athletes to state meet

(Claire Meador/Republic) Scotland's Christina Mogck, left, and Kayla Fischer compete in the 100-meter dash Thursday at the Region 6B track meet in Lake Andes. Mogck won the event with a time of 13 seconds and Fischer came in third place with a time of 13.10 seconds.

LAKE ANDES -- Before the Region 6B track meet Thursday, the Scotland girls' track team only had three girls qualified for the state track meet. After the Region 6B track meet, the team had eight athletes qualified.

The girls' team also picked up the Region 6B title with a score of 169 points. Hanson took second place with a score of 134.50 and Andes Central came in third place with 100 points.

"It feels amazing," Scotland track coach Gary Pepper said of the girls' success on Thursday.

"We have kind of struggled all year and we just came together at the right time. When somebody faltered (Thursday) we picked up the pieces and got right back at it. We just did really well."

The Scotland boys also won the Region 6B meet with a total of 111 points. Colome took second place with 89 points and South Central finished third with 86 points.

Junior Christina Mogck hadn't qualified for the state meet in any events before the region meet, but managed to qualify for four events on Thursday.

Mogck qualified for the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.00 seconds, the 200 dash with a time of 28.40 seconds and she was part of the 4X100 relay team, along with Jaymie Barrett, Kennidy Asche and Ashley Alvey, which qualified with a time of 54.10 seconds. Mogck was also part of the 4X200 relay, which qualified for the state meet with a time of 1 minute, 53.60 seconds. Other members of the 4X200 relay were Barrett, Asche and Alvey.

Mogck sprained her Sacroiliac Joint, the joint that connects your tailbone and your hip bone, earlier this year and wasn't able to compete in many events until recently. She said she's been slowly rehabbing to get back into shape and was finally able to fully compete in the past couple of meets.

"I didn't expect to qualify in any events (on Thursday)," Mogck said. "It's pretty awesome and I'm very excited to be able to run in my first state meet. Overall, it was a really good day for Scotland."

The Scotland boys also had an impressive day on the track. They qualified in three more events for the state meet.

Dan Stibral qualified in both the shot put event and the discus event. In the shot put, Stibral picked up a first-place finish with a throw of 42 feet, 5.75 inches. In the discus, he picked up a second-place finish with a toss of 115-06. Luke Van Gerpen of Avon took first place with a throw of 155-05.

The boys' 4x200 relay team consisting of Ryan Auch, Jared Kloucek, Bronson Baker and Garrett Kotalik qualified for the state meet with at finish time of 1:37.70. The team took second place with that time at the region meet on Thursday. Nick Poppe, Jonah Sturgeon, Brandon Kocmich and Jackson Powers of Avon grabbed the win in the event with a time of 1:35.20.

Auch also qualified for the state meet in the 100 dash with a time of 12.00 seconds, which was good enough for a second-place finish on Thursday. Esteben Rodriguez of Andes Central came in first place for the boys just ahead of Auch with a time of 12.00 seconds.

"We've been doing pretty well lately and getting a little better each week," Pepper said of Scotland's success on Thursday.

"We had a lot of athletes struggling with injuries before conference meet week and sometimes you've just got to be lucky. And we lucked out Thursday."
