McLaughlin is in northern South Dakota, on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation that straddles the South Dakota-North Dakota border.

The students and adults were in an SUV that hit ice, drifted into the median on Interstate 25 and rolled at least twice Monday about 16 miles south of the Wyoming border. They were taken to hospitals in Fort Collins and Loveland with what authorities said were serious injuries.

Officials say the children appeared to be the age of middle school students.

The Colorado State Patrol says alcohol and drugs aren't considered to be contributing factors in the crash but the investigation is continuing.
