SCHEDULE OF EVENTS FOR SD BIRDING FESTIVAL

Although pre-registration for the South Dakota Birding Festival has ended, anyone is welcome to register at the festival for any or all three days.

FRIDAY

At the Rainbow Room in Pickstown:

6 p.m. - Registration and social hour.

7 p.m. - Welcome, overview of weekend, door prizes.

8 p.m. - Listening to Birds: Basics of Bird Identification by Ear, with Dr. Dave Swanson, biology professor at USD.

At the Karl Mundt National Wildlife Refuge:

9:15 p.m. - Owl Prowl with Nancy Drilling, South Dakota projects coordinator with the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory.

SATURDAY

At Lake Andes National Wildlife Refuge:

6:30 a.m. - Bird banding workshop with Dr. Swanson.

7:15 a.m. - Birding field trips led by Swanson and Drilling.

12 p.m. - Lunch.

1 p.m. - Birding field trips continued.

At the Wagner National Guard Armory:

4 to 6 p.m. - Vendor booths and children-oriented activities.

4 p.m. - Tech devices and birding by Roger Dietrich, a South Dakota nature photographer.

4:30 to 5 p.m. - Birding recap.

5:30 p.m. - Banquet.

6:30 p.m. - Least terns and piping plovers on the Missouri River: A species overview, by Mike Delvaux, terrestrial science coordinator for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Gavins Point project.

SUNDAY

At Lake Andes National Wildlife Refuge:

6:30 a.m. - Bird banding workshop with Dr. Swanson.

At Karl Mundt National Wildlife Refuge:

7:45 a.m. to 12 p.m. - Birding field trip led by Mike Bryant of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the National Park Service.

12 p.m. - Species check off.
