RAPID CITY (AP) — The Pennington County Sheriff's Office plans to conduct saturation patrols until Aug. 10 to crack down on drunken driving during the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally that starts Monday in western South Dakota.

Deputies will be looking for drunken drivers and drivers who are not wearing seatbelts as part of an effort to reduce traffic accidents and injuries. The sheriff's office says anyone who plans to go out drinking should have a designated driver or plan to call a cab.

The state Highway Patrol is encouraging bikers and drivers to share the road. Col. Craig Price says there already have been eight fatal crashes involving motorcycles in South Dakota this year, and rally time puts thousands of more motorcycles on the highways.
