With two minutes to go, the Blackhawks were clinging to a six-point lead. But they did not panic. They collected themselves and answered back with a firestorm of points to defeat Mitchell Christian by a score of 63-53 at Mitchell Christian School.

"Mitchell Christian is a very scrappy team," Sanborn Central/Woonsocket co-head coach Rob Baruth said. "They are athletic and quick and we came out a little flat-footed, but credit to them they were ready to play and get after it.

"The girls did a good job and we made some big plays when we needed to make big plays. ... There were some big plays on the defensive end that lead to some big offensive buckets."

Sanborn Central/Woonsocket center Shelby Selland wreaked havoc on the Mitchell Christian post players. The junior finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Selland's younger sister and frontcourt partner Myah Selland scored 16 points, added seven assists and recorded three steals.

"You have to come prepared and ready to rebound every night and we have been working on that," Baruth said. "We wanted to improve our rebounding game and give teams only one shot."

Mitchell Christian (13-6) used its trademark press defense to give SC/W problems in the first half. The Eagles forced 20 turnovers and recorded nine team steals. At the end of the first quarter, the game was tied at 18. But in the early stages of the second quarter, MCS surged past the Blackhawks with a 9-2 run.

During the streak, Becca Glanzer, Brittany Zoss and Emily Reynen each converted layups and Alexa Van Laecken hit a 3-pointer to give the Eagles a 29-22 lead.

Van Laecken finished with 13 points and four rebounds. Guard Becca Glanzer was the Eagles' leading scorer with 24 points.

Sanborn Central/Woonsocket responded to the MCS run with a run of its own, The Blackhawks went on a 17-2 run between the end of the second quarter and the first four minutes of the second half. Mitchell Christian tried to muster a comeback and even got within four points on a Becca Glanzer three, but Sanborn Central/Woonsocket slammed the door after that.

"I am very proud of the girls," Mitchell Christian coach Jackie Van Laecken said. "They played 32 minutes of hard-fought basketball. We had a couple of quick turnovers that we didn't want and a couple of bad shots that we shouldn't have taken, but that's going to happen in a high-energy game like this."

Sanborn Central/Woonsocket finished its regular season 19-1 and plays the winner of Iroquois-Wolsey Wessington Tuesday in the district tournament. Mitchell Christian plays Corsica/Stickney 8 p.m. Thursday in the first round of districts at the Corn Palace.
