Safehouse Foundation to host fundraiser
It promises to be an evening of horse racing, extravagant hats and mint juleps.
The Mitchell Area Safehouse Foundation will host "A Night at the Races," a fundraising event scheduled from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday at the Highland Conference Center in Mitchell. Tickets are $35 and are being sold at County Fair Food Store, First Dakota National Bank and the Mitchell Area Chamber of Commerce.
Attendees of the event will be allowed to place bets on videos of horse races, with half the proceeds going to the foundation. There will also be a raffle, a live auction, a heads-and-tails event and a hat decorating contest.
Jean Koehler, the foundation's board president, said it is the first time the foundation has held such an event.
"We thought it was a really good idea and just sort of ran with it," Koehler said.
There is no fundraising goal the foundation hopes to reach at the event, Koehler said.
"With a first-year event, we just hope it's successful," she said.
If this year's event is successful, Koehler said the foundation hopes to make it an annual event.
The proceeds from event will support the foundation's endowment, which helps support the Mitchell Area Safehouse.
