Behind five 3-pointers from Kristin Sabers, Mitchell avenged its only loss from last year's state championship season.

Sabers matched a season-high 17 points and was perfect from behind the arc in the No. 2-ranked Kernels' 60-46 nonconference win over No. 5 Sioux Falls Lincoln Friday night at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

The senior forward had two 3-pointers in the first quarter, one in the second and added two in the fourth.

"We don't need to see her doing that," said Sioux Falls Lincoln coach Lyle Pearson, whose team was the only to beat Mitchell during the Kernels' 24-1 state-title season last year. "There's enough trouble out there without her doing that. She's a good shooter."

Sabers, who was one of three Mitchell scorers in double figures, also had 17 points on Jan. 29 in a home game against Pierre. That night, she knocked down three 3-pointers.

Against Lincoln, the Kernels were 9-of-18 from behind the arc, shooting more long-range shots than they normally have this season.

"We don't want to fall in love with it, and we still want to get to the basket," Mitchell coach Wes Morgan said. "But it's nice to see the ball go in the hole."

Macy Miller had 16 points and Kerri Young had 13 for the Kernels, who faced a Lincoln team without two of its starters in senior guard Darby Hugunin and forward Mica Standing Soldier. Between the two of them, they have seven years of starting experience.

Pearson said Standing Soldier had an ankle injury and will return to the lineup soon. He said the team will find out Tuesday about Hugunin, who's out with a wrist injury she suffered in a win over Sioux Falls Washington.

Still, without two starters, Lincoln trailed by only seven points at halftime before the Kernels broke away in the second half.

Mitchell led 32-16 with 4:23 left to play in the second quarter, but Lincoln went on a 9-0 run in the final four minutes to pull within 32-25 at the break.

The Kernels amped up their pressure defense early in the third, forcing turnovers and holing the Patriot offense to four points. Meanwhile, Young had six points in the third and Mitchell led 42-29 headed into the fourth.

"Defense is where it's at," Morgan said. "If we can continue to play defense like we have been, not get in foul trouble and play good man and zone defense, it's going to help us in the offensive end."

Sabers wasn't the only one hitting 3-pointers in the game. Megan Farnham, who had nine points, had a three midway through the fourth and Young added another on the next possession to put the Kernels up 58-36. From there, Mitchell coasted to the win.

Lincoln was led by Ellie Brecht's 14 points and Cera Ledbetter had 10. The Patriots were 19-of-44 from the field and outrebounded the Kernels 32-26.

Mitchell, which hosts Huron in an Eastern South Dakota Conference matchup at 3 p.m. today at the Corn Palace, was 23-of-55 from the field and 6-of-8 from the foul line. The Kernels are 16-2 on the season and 11-1 in the ESD.
