Roselyn Fiala, 87, formerly of Artesian and Mitchell, died Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, TX, from heart complications. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Friday May 16, at the First United Methodist Church in Mitchell. Burial will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Artesian. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7:00 PM at the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell.
She was born March 20, 1927 in Mitchell, SD, the daughter of Leslie and Dessie (Olson) Mitchell. A graduate of Artesian High School and Dakota Wesleyan University, Roselyn was a school teacher for 31 years. She began teaching in 1945 in a one-room school house south of Fedora, and upon retiring, was teaching 5th and 6th grades in Artesian. Roselyn was united in marriage on December 21, 1947, to Rudolph (Rudy) Fiala. They raised their four children on a farm southeast of Artesian. After retiring and selling the homestead, they moved to Mitchell. In 2002, they moved to Harlingen, TX. An avid reader, Roselyn also kept very active and enjoyed the Red Hats Club, Bible study, Bingo, water aerobics, cards, Rumicub, sightseeing in the Rio Grande Valley, and visits from family and friends.
Survivors include her children Franklin (Kay) Fiala, Huntsville, AL; Judy (Greg) Malnick, Montgomery, IL and Joanne (John) Metz, Crescent, IA; son-in-law, Tom (Jane) Tidd, Harlingen, TX; grandchildren: Jennifer (Paul) Savage, Jessica Fiala, Nicolaus (Gabrielle) Malnick, Aaron Malnick, Jaime (Bret) Roush, John (Elizabeth) Metz IV; great-grandchildren: Archer Savage, Asher and Audrey Malnick and twins, Gabriel and Owen Roush; brother, Ronald (Lillian), Mitchell and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rudy, and daughter, Sharon Tidd.
