The No. 3 Sioux Falls Roosevelt Rough Riders took control in the second half of a 74-56 win over Flora Macdonald Academy (Red Springs, N.C.) in the Fourth Annual Mike Miller Classic Friday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

0 Talk about it

The Rough Riders (2-0) shot nearly 60 percent from the field and outscored the Cougars 36-27 in the second half.

“The boys played really hard tonight,” Roosevelt coach Lee Taylor said. “We had some mistakes, but when you play hard you can overcome those mistakes.”

Roosevelt was led by senior guard Colton Kooima, who scored 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting and made 6 of his 10 attempts from three-point range.

“Colton is known for shooting the basketball, but he has really worked hard to fill his game out,” Taylor said. “He is just scratching the surface of how good he can be.”

Josh Kirkwold scored 18 points for Roosevelt, while Chris Phillips added 14 points.

Jason Spicer scored six points, and had game highs with 10 rebounds and eight assists in the win.

The Rough Riders took a nine-point lead into the locker room despite FM’s Deshawn Patterson hitting a half-court 3-pointer as time expired in the half. The Cougars got the game to within three points early in the second half at 41-38, but Roosevelt went on a 20-to-7 run put FM in a hole it could not dig out of.

“We just stayed consistent,” Taylor said. “We were able to use our depth a little bit and at the end of the game they got tired.”

The Cougars got 26 points from Shaun Kirk, who shot 8-of-24 from the field, while Patterson scored 14 of his 23 points in the second half.

The Rough Riders were 25-of-42 from the field as a team and made nine of their 18 attempts from three-point range. The Cougars were 40 percent from the field and 7-of-20 from behind the three-point line. Roosevelt won the rebounding battle 30-21 and had 16 assist as a team to seven by FM.

The Cougars continue in the Mike Miller Classic against Sioux Falls Washington at 5:15 p.m. today at the Corn Palace, while Roosevelt plays Moorhead (Minn.) Jan. 4 at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls.
