Rice takes fifth to lead MHS boys
BRANDON -- Junior Jacob Rice tied for fifth to lead the Mitchell High School boys' golf team in its season opener Monday. Rice shot a 74 and the Kernels finished seventh with a team score of 324 at the Brandon Valley Invitational. Yankton won the team title with a 293, edging Sioux Falls O'Gorman's 296 team total. The Bucks and Knights placed in the top three at last year's Class AA state tournament. Yankton's Jace Guthmiller won the event, recording a 68.Mitchell was two strokes from Harrisburg, which finished sixth with a 322. "We were very happy, and in talking to both coach (Mark) Horan and the players, they said it might be one of the best scores we've shot as a team in the past couple years," co-head coach Rob Marchand said. Junior Jaron Weich was right behind Rice, shooting a 75 for a ninth-place tie. Cade Carpenter had an 86, while sophomore Landon Pooley recorded an 89. The top four scores went toward Mitchell's team total. "To have two players medal in Rice and Weich in a tournament like this is great," Marchand said. "There were a lot of good teams and players there, but we held our own and I was pleased with our team effort." Ryan Solberg and Aaron Sudbeck also competed for Mitchell, recording 92 and 102, respectively. Marchand said the team did well but has room for improvement in its short-game play. We're going to make mistakes in the long game, so if you can save strokes in the short game, it's going to improve your score," he said. "Even the guys that medaled said they could've done better on that." The Mitchell JV squad hosts Huron at 2 p.m. Monday at Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell. Varsity is back in action Aug. 27 when it travels to the Pierre Invitational.
