Detective Dusty Pelle with the Pierre Police Department tells KCCR-AM that 79 pounds of old and unneeded drugs were dropped off Saturday during a local "Take Back Day" event.

Pelle says 79 residents dropped off medications. The event was part of a national initiative that allows people to turn in prescription and over-the-counter medications that are no longer used or have expired.

Pelle says this was the department's single largest take-back event. Before Saturday, the department had collected more than 200 pounds of medications during seven events.
