Renner tops Castlewood 12-3

An eight-run ninth inning put the Renner Monarchs up 12-3 as they were able to finish off the Castlewood Ravens in an elimination game Saturday at the South Dakota Class A state amateur baseball tournament at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.

The game was 4-3 going into the ninth inning, when the Monarchs strung together eight runs to take a commanding lead.

Tim Huber and David Borchardt both homered for Renner and Juan Thomas added three RBIs to lead the team offensively.

Jack VanLeur earned the win for the Monarchs, giving up three runs, two earned, off six hits and struck out two.

Eric Danforth took the loss on the mound for the Ravens, giving up four runs off 11 hits while adding five strikeouts.

Ryan Ellingson had two doubles and two RBIs to lead Castlewood.

Renner advances to play the Sioux Falls Brewers at 5:30 p.m. at Cadwell Park, for a spot in the Class A state amateur championship game against the Vermillion Red Sox.
