ABERDEEN (AP) — The Aberdeen Area Indian Health Service has changed its name after more than half a century, following consultations with tribal leaders in the region.

The agency that oversees 19 federally and tribally managed service units in South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa is now known as the Great Plains Area IHS.

Officials say the new name not only reflects the geographical region but also honors the tribes who have been part of the Plains for thousands of years.

The regional IHS office headquartered in the South Dakota city of Aberdeen was established in 1955. It collaborates with the 19 service units to provide health care to about 122,000 people.
