The board on Tuesday announced Paul Turman will lead the system's academic programs and planning efforts.

Turman will succeed Sam Gingerich, who will retire later this year. Turman joined the regents' staff in 2006. His work includes academic assessment, research and economic development strategies.

Before working for the Board of Regents, Turman was an associate professor of communication studies at the University of Northern Iowa. He holds a doctorate degree in communications studies from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He is a native of Fort Pierre.

The board sets policies for the programs and services offered at South Dakota's six public universities and two special schools.
