Rally falls short as Tigers lose 49-42 to Northwestern
ORANGE CITY, Iowa — On the final play of the game, the Dakota Wesleyan University football team was stopped just short of the goal line, leaving the Tiger rally coming up short.
The Tigers scored 14 points in the fourth but dropped a Great Plains Athletic Conference game to No. 21 Northwestern 49-42 Saturday.
“Our offense did a great job of battling back to have a shot to win at the end of the game,” DWU head coach Ross Cimpl said.
DWU quarterback Jon Bane completed 21 of 44 pass attempts for 444 yards and three touchdowns, while wide receiver Anthony Muilenburg hauled in six pass for 251 yards.
The Tigers finished with 544 yards of total offense, while Northwestern had 529 yards of total offense. Northwestern was led by running back Theo Bertram, who rushed for 122 yards.
With 49 seconds left in the game, the Tigers drove down the field, threatening to tie the game. DWU reached the 1-yard line but a run by Francois Barnaud was thwarted at the goalline and the Tigers were denied the victory.
Barnaud rushed 29 times and finished with 83 yards and three touchdowns.
“We weren’t quite as sound on defense in the first half as we wanted, but dug in and let up just seven points in the second half,” Cimpl said.
The Tigers are now 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the GPAC. DWU started its season with three road games but returns home next week for its home opener against Hastings College.
