Post 18 edges Gillette, Spearfish in tourney
RAPID CITY -- The Mitchell Legion baseball team pulled out two one-run victories Friday to improve to 3-0 at the Rapid City Post 22 tournament.
Post 18 defeated Gillette, Wyo., 5-4 in its first game and edged Spearfish 7-6 in the second.
In the opening game, Mitchell trailed 6-4 after the third. Post 18 scored two runs to tie the game in the sixth before scoring in the bottom of the seventh to win.
In the seventh, Mitchell had two walks with a base hit following. Post 18 took the victory after a walk-off walk by Jared Schmidt.
Derek Miller started for Mitchell in the opening game, giving up one earned run on four hits while striking out five in five innings.
Ben Miller got the win in relief after giving up one hit and striking out two in the final inning.
Evan Mastel and Lakin Neugebauer were 2-for-3, Landon Neugebauer had an RBI double and Aaron Sudbeck was 1-for-2 with an RBI single.
In the second game, Matt Larson got the win in relief, throwing the final four innings. Larson gave up one hit and came in after Josh Schmidt threw the first three innings.
Mastel was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a double, while Landon Neugebauer was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Jared Schmidt was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, Dylanger Pierson was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Sudbeck was 3-for-3 with two runs scored.
"We had lots of hits in both games, but we just couldn't get a big hit to break the game open in the second," Mitchell coach Luke Norden said, adding his team had 15 hits against Spearfish.
Mitchell (33-11) plays against Post 22 at 3:30 p.m. Central time today and finishes the weekend against Dickinson, N.D., at 10:30 a.m. Central time Sunday.
