The Kernels, who scored 71 points total last year, have 122 points after the first day of the tournament.

Sioux Falls O’Gorman leads the way with 372 points, 20 ahead of St. Thomas More.

After starting with a first-round bye, Pooley defeated Pierre’s Peyton Forney 6-1, 6-0 at Flight 4 to move on.

Pooley will take on Rapid City Stevens’ Alisha Wiedmeier in third-round action today.

“She is playing for a chance for a medal and if she comes out and plays well, she will be in a good position,” Mitchell coach Pat Moller said.

Grabenstein advanced to the second round after beating Spearfish’s Kajsa Iverson 6-3, 6-1 at Flight 1. Grabenstein fell in the second round to Aberdeen Central’s Kristen Hanson 6-0, 6-2.

“She played some of the best tennis I’ve seen her play all year,” Moller said. “Anytime you can get points from your No. 1 in a tournament like this it is huge.”

In Flight 2 doubles, Pooley and Avery Larson took their second-round match over Huron’s Bailey Harvey and Cassie Hedblom 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. They dropped their next match to Rapid City Stevens.

Play continues today at 9 a.m. weather permitting in Sioux Falls and Brandon.
