Platte man pleads guilty to child abuse
LAKE ANDES — A Platte man pleaded guilty Tuesday to felony child abuse.
Kip (sometimes spelled in court documents as “Kipp”) DeGroot, 21, entered his plea during court at the Charles Mix County Courthouse in Lake Andes.
DeGroot pleaded guilty to exposing a minor to foreseeable harm, which is classified under abuse or cruelty to a minor as a felony in state law.
According to court documents, DeGroot was originally indicted in July 2012 on a fourth-degree rape charge, which accused him of being at least three years older than the victim and sexually penetrating a person who was at least 13 but less than 16, and for furnishing alcohol to a minor younger than 18.
Court documents filed Tuesday state DeGroot picked up a minor girl on or about Nov. 17, 2011, at her residence at 3 a.m. and engaged in contact of a sexual nature.
The child abuse conviction carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a $20,000 fine or both. A presentence investigation was ordered and sentencing is scheduled for December.
