Mitchell paramedics remove Keith Deurmier, 77, from the 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier his wife Betty, 78, was driving during a 9:48 a.m. collision Wednesday at the intersection of Norway Avenue and Burr Street in Mitchell. Police Officer Russ Stevenson said the Mitchell couple's Chevrolet ran a red light and turned in front of a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am driven by Stephanie Swenson, 35, of Sioux Falls, who was driving south on Burr Street. The Deurmiers were not wearing seat belts, Stevenson said. Mrs. Deurmier was flown to a Sioux Falls hospital for treatment of serious head injuries. Mitchell Fire and Rescue used the Jaws of Life to extricate Mr. Deurmier from the car. He was taken to Avera Queen of Peace hospital in Mitchell. His injuries, Stevenson said, appeared serious but not life-threatening. Traffic citations are pending. Swenson was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.
