Tracy Pardy, foundation director for Avera Queen of Peace in Mitchell, talks to children Wednesday afternoon at John Paul II Elementary School. Pardy and Charlene Berke, director of Avera’s Cancer Center, visited John Paul II to receive a donation of $1,194.92 to the Cancer Center from the students. The students used a modified calendar to collect coins during the Christmas holiday, said Principal Robin Cahoy. Every day during Advent, the calendar told students how much to donate -- for instance, “one day was 2 cents for every pair of shoes in the house,” Cahoy said. The money was raised in memory of Tom Selland, husband of music teacher Sandy Selland, and in honor of cafeteria worker Angie Larson, who is battling cancer. (Sean Ryan/The Daily Republic)
