Parkston vet honored for beef promotion
The South Dakota Beef Industry Council honored two businesses, an individual and a couple for outstanding efforts in promoting the beef industry during the 2013 Prime Promoter Award luncheon Sept. 14 in Brookings during the organization’s annual meeting.
Dr. Dave Barz, owner of Northwest Veterinary and Supply based in Parkston, was named Prime Promoter in the individual category. Barz was recognized as one of South Dakota’s leading advocates for the use of accepted animal handling techniques and Beef Quality Assurance programs by beef producers.
Barz has provided BQA training for beef producers at Dakotafest and other events in an effort to promote a proactive approach toward food safety and product quality.
He has also assumed a lead role in the fundraising effort for the construction of a new state-of-the-art cow/calf unit at SDSU and sponsored positions in the SDSU Extension Ag CEO program, demonstrating his desire to create a business mindset for livestock producers as they face a changing and challenging environment.
Also recognized were D&K Outpost, Highmore, owned by Karen and Greg Swenson; Mid-Dakota Meats LLC, owned by Kevin and Angela Leiferman; and Dean and Eileen Strong, former owners of the Belle Fourche Livestock Exchange.
