SIOUX FALLS -- Parkston native Matt Malloy has been suspended indefinitely from the University of Sioux Falls men's basketball team, USF Assistant Athletic Director Kevin Hesser told The Daily Republic on Friday afternoon.

Malloy and teammate Eric Tisby each were arrested following an altercation at a Sioux Falls convenience store early Friday morning.

Malloy was arrested for driving under the influence, while Tisby was arrested for simple assault of a male clerk, Sioux Falls Police Department Public Information Officer Sam Clemens told The Daily Republic on Friday afternoon. Both crimes are misdemeanors.

"Right now, the two individuals are suspended for violating team rules," Hesser said. "It is an indefinite suspension, which means they will not be practicing with the team or with the team on game days."

Malloy and Tisby, who are both 22-year-old seniors, were at a convenience store at 3312 S. Western Ave. at 2 a.m. when officers were called to the scene.

According to Clemens, "We had two people inside the store causing problems, and those people turned out to be Malloy and Tisby. ... The clerk asked the two to leave the store and there were some words exchanged at that point. ... Tisby poked his finger in the clerk's face and when the clerk tried to get Tisby's finger away from him, Malloy jumped on his back.

"Tisby then punched the clerk two or three times in the head and both of them left the building and drove away in the vehicle."

Another patron at the gas station got the license number from the vehicle, and officers arrested Malloy and Tisby at approximately 2:40 a.m. at 29th Street and Spring Avenue, Clemens said.

The date of court appearances for Tisby and Malloy was not immediately known.

USF (16-6 overall, 8-3 Great Plains Athletic Conference) is ranked 19th in the latest NAIA poll. Malloy has started 21 games and leads the Cougars in minutes played (34.4 per game), points (14.3 per game) and assists (55). He also averages 4.3 rebounds per contest.

Tisby has started 19 games and has averaged 13.1 points per game, which is second best on the team.

USF hosts Doane College at 4 p.m. today and has six regular season games before the GPAC tournament, which is scheduled to be played in Sioux Falls on Feb. 22. One of the Cougars' remaining games is against Dakota Wesleyan University on Wednesday in Sioux Falls.

DWU coach Shane Murphy's squad plays today against Midland University in Fremont, Neb.

"I'm not going to comment on that right now," Murphy said of the effect the arrests could have on the rest of the GPAC season. "Our focus is on Midland (today), so we're not going to worry about any of that until after (today)."
