PARKSTON — The Parkston School District learned recently that its students earned the top average ACT composite score in South Dakota for 2013.

The composite score is the average of test scores in the English, math, reading and science segments of the ACT, which is a college-readiness exam for high-schoolers.

Parkston Superintendent Shayne McIntosh said 29 of 36 seniors of the Parkston High School Class of 2013 took the test.

They earned an average composite score of 24.34 out of a possible 36. The next highest average composite score was 23.97, posted by Brookings.

“We recognize that we had a pretty ambitious and talented group of seniors and we’re proud of what they accomplished,” McIntosh said.

McIntosh said his district received the new standings from ACT last week, shortly before the state released overall ACT numbers.

A state Department of Education news release noted that 80 percent of South Dakota’s 2013 graduates took the ACT, earning a statewide average composite score of 21.9, which compares well against a national average of 20.9.

Mitchell students earned an ACT average composite score of 23.16, up from 22.98 in 2012.

Superintendent Joe Graves said he’s pleased with the upward trend in test scores.

“As recently as 2010 our student scores were at 22.5. We are more than a half a point up from that, which is statistically significant.”
