The Trojans will attempt to win their third consecutive state title at the Class A tournament Monday and Tuesday at the Spearfish Canyon Country Club. The team has won three titles since 2009, with runner-up finishes in the other two seasons.

“Golf has picked up as a big thing in this town,” Parkston coach Tyler Hockett. “It started in 2009 with the state title for the girls, and the boys see that and do their own thing. When you have a team that is successful, others see that and want to have that as well.”

The Parkston boys team finished second at the state tournament in October. Sioux Falls Christian will be the strongest obstacle for Parkston to overcome in its pursuit of a three peat. The two teams have seen each other four times this season, with Parkston coming out on top on three occasions. Sioux Falls Christian is the only

Class A team to top Parkston this season. Chamberlain, Wagner and Winner will also each have girls golfers competing at the Class A tournament.

The Trojan team is led by 2012 individual champion Sydney Bormann. The sophomore has taken first place individually in every event she has competed in this season. Bormann, finished third last year, when the second round of the tournament was cancelled last year due to weather.

“I really think that Sydney Bormann is leaps and bounds above the competition individually,” Hockett said.

Also back from last year’s title team is sophomore Sydney Weber, who placed 16th at the state tournament as a freshman and has competed in the event twice.

Junior Sierra Stands, eighth-grader Jayden Bormann and junior Tiana Kruse will all be competing for the Trojans at the state tournament for the first time, replacing three graduated seniors.

“I look for a really good tournament from Sydney Weber and I think she is going to post two really good days,” Hockett said. “It’s going to be who can be the most mentally tough. It’s going to take all five of us.”

The Trojans are leaving for Spearfish after graduation ceremonies today in Parkston and will play a practice round Sunday morning.

Bormann will be in the first group of four to tee off at 9 a.m.

Hockett said he is familiar with the course in Spearfish, since it hosted a boys state tournament in the past and his girls players have had a chance to play practice rounds there.

“It has the potential to be a very tough course, especially if the wind blows hard,” Hockett said, adding that the course in Spearfish has a lot of trees and number of elevated shots for the players according to Hockett.

Other Class A schools competing in state tournament in Spearfish include:

Chamberlain: Brigitte Byrd, Brett Story; Wagner: Kathleen Juffer, Megan Zephier; Winner: Elizabeth Jankauskas, Natalie Gronlund, Kennede Mathis, Ronae Klein, Samantha Marts.
