OUR VIEW: Yes, Mitchell is a great place to live
We don’t need an oddly named website to tell us that Mitchell is a great place to live. Anyone who lives here — and at least anyone with a clear mind — already knows that.
Tuesday, The Daily Republic reported that NerdWallet, a consumer advocacy website, ranked Yankton as the No.1 place to raise a family in South Dakota. Yankton was followed by Mitchell, Elk Point, North Sioux City, Tea, Watertown, Volga, Harrisburg, Spearfish and Aberdeen.
The people at NerdWallet used state and federal data to rank the cities based on public schools, median home value, ongoing cost of home ownership, median income and economic growth. Only towns with at least 2,000 residents were considered.
NerdWallet stated Mitchell ranked high because it is a county seat, it’s within an hour’s drive of Sioux Falls, it has a great school system and it has great opportunity for postsecondary education.
However, what the people at NerdWallet didn’t note is our city’s great park system, its walking trails and its low rate of unemployment. All of these also could be factored in to possibly make Mitchell even more attractive to families.
Of course, we’re jaded.
Yes, Mitchell is a great place to live and those of us who live here know it. Still, we’re proud to report when even the most obscure of websites or agencies rank us as a great place to raise a family.
