OUR VIEW: Plans for Sixth Avenue will add beauty, safety to city’s downtown
Mitchell South Dakota 120 South Lawler 57301

We caught ourselves a few times staring at the image we printed on Page 3 of Thursday’s edition.

The image outlined a concept that will close Sixth Avenue near the Corn Palace. In place of traffic on the street will be a green space, with trees and grass. A portion of Sixth Avenue will remain open, but mostly — we assume — as a way to help get travelers to the parking lot adjacent to the Score Board Pub & Grille.

Main Street will not be affected, nor will Lawler Street.

The idea was approved during Monday evening’s meeting of the City Council.

We like the idea, and mostly because it will add beauty to the area near the Corn Palace and at a minimum of inconvenience. Sixth Avenue is often closed anyway, since seasonal workers at the Corn Palace use the street to stretch out while they install new murals each year. We also see it as increasing safety near the Corn Palace; during the summer, traffic sometimes is a concern and this should help. Too, it shouldn’t negatively affect business in the area. It’s a good plan, and one that probably is overdue.
