OUR VIEW: Do what you can for Springs
Mitchell South Dakota 120 South Lawler 57301

Employees can wear jeans every Friday at The Daily Republic in exchange for $1, which goes into our Jeans for Charity Fund. Over the years, that fund has paid out thousands of dollars to local and area organizations and causes.

Today, we'll conduct a special Jeans for Charity day, with larger donations encouraged for the Wessington Springs Tornado Relief Fund. Employee contributions will be matched.

It's one of many efforts Mitchell residents have undertaken to help those in need in Wessington Springs following a June 18 tornado that damaged dozens of structures in the small town, located about 50 miles northwest of Mitchell.

We're proud of Mitchell's response and urge all of our readers to do whatever they can to help the Wessington Springs tornado victims.

Here are some other upcoming or ongoing ways to help:

• This Saturday, participating businesses in Mitchell will donate a percentage of the day's sales or make a monetary donation to the Wessington Springs Relief Fund. Learn more on the Mitchell Main Street & Beyond Facebook page.

• KMIT Radio and the Chad Greenway Lead the Way Foundation will conduct a one-day Radio-Thon on Monday. Money raised will go to kids 12 and under in the Wessington Springs area to replace toys, bikes, sports equipment, etc., lost in the tornado. Call 605-996-9667 or 1-800-244-5648 to make donations.

• To donate directly to the Wessington Springs Relief Fund, send donations to American Bank and Trust, P.O. Box 469, Wessington Springs, SD, 57382. Checks should be made out to "Wessington Springs Tornado Relief." Donations can also be made by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS, or by going to redcross.org, and designating donations to Wessington Springs.
