Orville E. Hofer

Orville E. Hofer, eldest son of Paul Hofer and Barbara Glanzer Hofer, was born February 19, 1932 on the family farm east of Bridgewater. He passed away Tuesday morning, November 12, 2013 at the Golden Living Center in Salem, SD.

The funeral service will be held at the Zion Lutheran Church in Bridgewater on Saturday, November 16th at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be at the church Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. with the family present.

After graduation from Bridgewater High School in 1950, he served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1957, stationed in Panama. Upon discharge, he began farming with his father.

On June 3, 1958 He was united in marriage with Irene Anderson. To this union, one son and four daughters were born.

Orville served as McCook County Commissioner for 28 years from 1980-2008. He also served as a member of the Southeastern Mental Health Board for nine years. Orville's first love was his family, and then the farm. He enjoyed sports, especially attending his grandchildren's games. He also enjoyed country music, bowling, reading, and visiting with friends.

Grateful for having shared his life include: his wife, Irene; children, Marcia (Ron Patton) Smith of Sioux Falls, Gene (Tara) Hofer of Bridgewater, Shelli (Todd) Kirby of Salem, and Janelle Hofer of Deptford, NJ; son-in-law, Eric Leaf of Sioux Falls; sisters, Verona Young of Seattle, WA and Connie Hofer of Glenview, IL; nine grandchildren; Jarod and Audra Smith, Kyle, Morgan, and MiKenzie Kirby, Casey Leaf, and Nick, Carson, and Tanner Hofer; one uncle, Sam Hofer of Scotland, SD, and eight nieces and nephews.

Orville was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara; father, Paul; stepmother, Yvonne; brothers, Wally, Wesley, and Jerry; daughter, Linda (Eric) Leaf; niece, Barbara Hofer Valdez and nephew, Darrell Hofer.
