Orris' parents moved to a farm south of Gregory in 1920, where he grew up, along with two sisters and four brothers. He attended the first eight grades at Meadow Brook School, after which he attended Gregory High School, graduating with the Class of 1938. He then enrolled at Southern Normal College at Springfield, SD and received an elementary certificate of education.

Orris then taught rural schools in Gregory and Tripp counties. On August 27, 1942 he married his sweetheart, Ruth Evans at Colome, South Dakota. In November 1942 he was inducted into the US Army, serving almost 3 years - one of them overseas. Upon returning home from the service, Orris and Ruth built Petersen Produce, which they owned and operated about 30 years. They also became members of Grace Ev. Lutheran Church in Burke. Orris served as a church board member for several years. He also served positions on the city council and crop and Livestock Board. Orris was a member of the VFW. After selling Petersen Produce in 1972, Orris, along with son Greg, entered the Charolaise Cattle business. They operated another 30+ years before finally retiring at about the age of 89. One of the biggest passions in Orris' life was his announcing little league baseball games, which he did for thirty some years. He not only announced when Greg played, but it was a proud day the first time James stepped up to the plate.

Preceding him in death were his beloved wife, Ruth, his parents, two sisters and four brothers.

He leaves to mourn his passing his son Greg and wife Kathy of Burke and his special grandchildren James, of Ottumwa, IA and Courtney (Mike) Deinert of Mt. Vernon, SD and the "twinkle of his eye," Great-granddaughter Hattie Ruth Deinert. He also leaves to mourn many nieces and nephews and many, many friends.

Memorials may be directed to Community Memorial Hospital or Grace Lutheran Church.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at 10:30 AM at the Grace Lutheran Church on Burke, SD. Visitation will be Monday from 6 to 7 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at the Church. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery, Burke. Clausen Funeral Home, Burke, is handling the arrangements.
