Old SD governor's mansion being auctioned

RAPID CITY (AP) — The mansion that was home to 16 South Dakota governors is up for auction near Rapid City.

The residence sits on 17 1/2 acres in Rapid Valley and is a piece of South Dakota history.

But after devastating business losses suffered by the home's former owners and because the house has sat on the market unsold for months, it will be auctioned to the highest bidder at 10 a.m. Thursday.

The 18-room, 7,000-square-foot home was built in 1936. It was moved in 2003 from its spot in Pierre on the edge of Capitol Lake to make way for the new $3 million, 14,000-square-foot, 73-room Governor's Mansion built completely with donated funds.
