PINE RIDGE (AP) — Suspended Oglala Sioux President Bryan Brewer says allegations against him are unfounded.

The Tribal Council suspended Brewer last week following allegations that he acted without the council's approval on two occasions and mishandled a $5,000 check. The council has scheduled a July 17 hearing to determine whether he should be reinstated or impeached.

The Rapid City Journal reports that Brewer issued a statement saying the accusations are a "smear campaign" and that his suspension has "dragged us into the quicksand of domestic infighting."

A tribal judge will oversee the July 17 hearing, with the eventual decision on Brewer's future left to the council. It would take a two-thirds vote of the 19-member council to remove Brewer from office.
