Notebook: Rains force pair of games to second day of tourney
A rainy Friday morning and early afternoon made anxious and state-ready teener teams wait. And wait.
The weather caused several breaks in play, totaling a four-hour delay. Originally, five games were scheduled to be played on Mitchell’s two largest baseball diamonds -- Drake Field and Cadwell Park.
Because of Friday’s constant rain, tournament director Kevin DeVries was forced to move the two late games to tonight. The Mitchell Black vs. Pierre game, which was set for 8 p.m. Friday at Cadwell Park, and Brookings Black vs. Renner Post 307, which was set for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Drake Field, will be played at the conclusion of today’s games on both fields.
The Rapid City teener baseball team is representing for all Rapid City 14-year-old Pony League baseball players at the VFW AA majors tournament this weekend in Mitchell.
Rapid City’s squad is an all-star team made up of 12 players. Rapid City’s Pony League also sent an all-star team -- of 12 players -- to the AA minors tournament this weekend in Watertown.
There are 13 teams in the Pony League, and after the regular season is finished, the league fields a team to play in the VFW state tournaments at the end of the summer.
These tournament teams also played in several tournaments during the season. Vern Lind, VFW state baseball chairman said the 13-14 teener tournaments are open tournaments -- meaning any team is free to enter.
The difference between Rapid City and other teams is the time it picks its tournament team. The Rapid City Pony team entered in this weekend’s tournament has played 18 games this summer and has a 16-2 record.
“All the teams are all-star teams,” Lind said. “Most of the teams have tryouts early on in the season and teams are chosen that way. Rapid City selects its team late in the season is all.”
The only location that has more than one team competing in the tournament is Sioux Falls with its East and West teams.
Mitchell Black vs. state tourney teams
When playing against state tournament teams this season, Mitchell Black posted a 22-12 record.
Of the teams in Mitchell’s pool this weekend, it has a 1-4 record against Brookings and a 4-2 record against Pierre. Mitchell’s only meeting of the year against Renner Post 307 was Friday. Mitchell will face both of those teams today.
After Friday’s game, Mitchell has won games over every team in the state tournament except for Rapid City Pony. Mitchell played Rapid City in a doubleheader earlier in the season but was swept.
