The camp was held Tuesday and Wednesday at Joe Quintal Field in Mitchell and featured 297 kids from Mitchell and other area towns.

The camp was comprised of football players' grades 9-12 and hosted a number of different coaches from area towns, the Dakota Wesleyan University coaching staff and South Dakota National Guard recruiters. It also featured a 7-on-7 tournament where Parkston was the champion and Yankton Black was the runner up. Chandler Nelson of McCook Central/Montrose won the lineman challenge, Josh Knodel of Avon took second place and Kardel Miller of Ethan took third place.

"I don't know if the first time could have gone any better," VanOverschelde said of the camp.

"We wanted to run the best camp possible and with the joint effort of the coaches, the National Guard and the Dakota Wesleyan University staff, we had a really good outcome."

VanOverschelde said that because of the success the camp had this year, he hopes that Mitchell will be able to host the camp next year as well.

"We were fortunate that the camp went well and we had really nice weather for the two days," he said.

"It was a joint effort from a lot of people who made the camp such a success."

NOTES: Drawings were also held during the camp and the following players won prizes:

Cole Cheeseman of McCook Central/Montrose won a signed Adrian Peterson t-shirt; Nathan Dawson of Howard won Vikings tickets; Austin Miller of Ethan won a winter Vikings coat signed by Jared Allen.
