Former police chief found guilty of murder

MOUNT VERNON: Area students advance to state essay, poetry contest

American Legion Auxiliary President Roberta Olsen and Secretary Carol Koepke attended the District 6 meeting in Arlington on April 4. Koepke was named the District Legionette of the Year and will now compete for the State Legionette at the department convention in June, which will be held in Pierre. Congratulations to Carol Koepke and good luck.

District winners in the Americanism Essay and Poem Contest were: Ashley Glanzer, Class IV essay and Jeremy Lawrenson, Class V poems. Their entries will now advance to the state competition. Brynna Sinke received an honorable mention in the Class I poem contest. Congratulations students.

Activities for this week include:

Today, there will be a track meet in Mitchell at 4 p.m. The baseball team will travel to Parkston for 5:30 p.m. game.

Tuesday, there will be a boys’ golf meet in Avon at 10:30 a.m. Junior High at Scotland and JV at Bon Homme.

There will be a varsity track meet in Wagner at 2 p.m.

Thursday, there will be a boys’ varsity golf meet at 10 a.m. at Avon. There will be a junior high track meet at Corsica High School at 1 p.m. and a varsity track meet at 4 p.m. in Mitchell.

Friday and April 21 there will be no school in Mount Vernon due to Easter vacation.
