Olson leads Denver past South Dakota 75-67
DENVER (AP) — Brett Olson scored a career-high 30 points to lead Denver, which committed a season-low five turnovers, past South Dakota 75-67 Saturday.
Olson also set career-highs for field goals (eight) and 3-point field goals (six).
USD scored eight straight points over a 26 second span, including a 3-pointer by Trey Norris with 7 seconds to go, to make it 73-67, but Olson hit a pair of free throws two seconds late to seal the win for Denver (12-11, 5-3).
SDSU men rout IUPUI 83-59
BROOKINGS (AP) — Jordan Dykstra scored 17 points as South Dakota State won its fourth straight with an 83-59 victory over IUPUI on Saturday.
South Dakota State (14-10, 6-3 Summit League) built a 42-27 halftime advantage and led by as many as 31 in the second half en route to its ninth straight win over IUPUI (5-21, 0-9).
Brayden Carlson added 14 points and Cody Larson had 13 for South Dakota State, which shot 8 of 19 from beyond the arc and committed just four turnovers.
SDSU women’s win streak ends
INDIANAPOLIS — DeAirra Goss scored a game-high 27 points as Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis upset the South Dakota State University women’s basketball team 76-66 Saturday.
With the loss, the Jackrabbits (17-8) and Jaguars (18-6) are tied for first in the Summit League with 8-1 records. SDSU’s eight-game win streak came to an end with the loss.
Mariah Clarin led SDSU with 13 points and five rebounds, Steph Paluch scored 11 and Chynna Stevens added 10.
Kerri Young, a Mitchell native, scored seven points for SDSU, which was 20-of-46 from the field and 21-of-28 from the line.
SDSU hosts Omaha at 7 p.m. Thursday at Frost Arena in Brookings.
Fighting Cougars have 2 champs, win tournament
VOLGA — McCook Central/Montrose totaled 151 points and won the Big East Lake Central wrestling tournament Saturday.
The Fighting Cougars had two champions in John Hoiten (182) and Cain Rotert (220). Clark-Willow Lake took second with 139 points. At left are more results.
Howard crowned three champions, including Bailey Neises (126), Luke Loudenburg (132) and Kaleb Haas (170).
Parkston, Winner finish atop Big Dakota tourney
FORT PIERRE — Parkston crowned five champions and won the Big Dakota wrestling tournament Saturday.
The Trojans tallied 228 points and Winner took second with 199 points. At left are more results.
Parkston’s Dawson Semmler (126), Blake Bietz (132), Miles Semmler (170), Mitch Heisinger (182) and Brady Reiff (220) each won their weight classes.
Winner’s Patrick Aeschbacher (113), Sean Bice (138) and Tyrel Haley (145) also earned titles.
Marlin boys go 2-2 in N. Dakota
GRAND RAPIDS, N.D. — The Mitchell Marlin boys went 2-2 at a hockey tournament over the weekend in Grand Rapids, N.D.
The Marlins beat Duluth (Minn.) 7-2 and Grand Forks (N.D.) 5-1 and Jesse Grosdidier had a hat trick against Grand Forks.
Mitchell lost to St. Thomas Aquanis (Can.) 4-0 and Bloomington Jefferson (Minn.) 5-1.
The Marlins play Watertown Feb. 21 in Watertown.
