Marlin boys beat Huron 7-2 for first win of the season

HURON — The Mitchell Marlins boys’ hockey team defeated the Huron Allstars 7-2 for its first win of the season.

The Marlins (1-3) got a hat-trick from Jordan Grosdidier, who added an assist to the score sheet as well. Spencer Neugebauer added two goals, while Jacob Cersosimo and Alex Murtha each found the back of the net in the win.

Weston Gauger picked up the win in net for Mitchell, making 13 saves on 15 shots.

The Marlins play Sioux Falls Jan. 3 in Sioux Falls.

MTSU tops SDSU women 59-44

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — The South Dakota State women’s basketball teams’ five game win streak came to a halt Saturday with a 59-44 loss to Middle Tennessee State.

The Jackrabbits were 16-of-47 from the field, including 5-of-20 from 3-point range.

Senior guard Steph Paluch led the way for SDSU with 10 points. She was the only Jackrabbit to score in double figures.

Junior forward Mariah Clarin chipped in with eight points. SDSU freshman guard and Mitchell native Kerri Young was 1 of 6 shooting and had three points.

MTSU was led by Ebony Rowe, who tallied 29 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double.

SDSU (9-5) continues its road trip against the University of Arkansas-Little Rock Sunday in Little Rock, Ark.

Coyotes fall to Nebraska 87-53

LINCOLN, Neb. — The University of South Dakota women’s basketball team fell to Nebraska 87-53 Saturday at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

The Coyotes were 17-of-58 from the field and 4-of-25 from 3-point range.

Raeshel Contreras led USD with 17 points. Nicole Seekamp and Tia Hemiller chipped in with 11 points each.

The Coyotes were 15-of-23 from the free-throw line and recorded 33 rebounds.

Nebraska was led by Jordan Hooper, who finished with 19 points and seven rebounds.

Tear’a Laudermill added 15 points and five rebounds for the Cornhuskers.

USD (7-6) plays Valparaiso Dec. 31 in Valparaiso, Ind.

Jackrabbit men beat UND 77-70

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Brayden Carlson scored 22 points and Cody Larson added 21 on Saturday and South Dakota State held off a North Dakota surge to win 77-70.

Troy Huff opened with a dunk for North Dakota (3-7), but Larson hit a jumper, layup and free throw to put the Jackrabbits (7-7) ahead 7-2, and Anders Broman hit back-to-back 3-pointers to boost the lead to 19-10. But North Dakota came back with a 12-2 run, tying the game at 32 at halftime on a jumper by Jamal Webb.

The lead traded hands four times in the second half until 14:30, when Carlson hit a 3-pointer, sparking a 9-0 run and a 49-40 Jackrabbits lead. North Dakota rallied, making it a one-point game on a Quinton Hooker jumper, but the Jackrabbits pulled ahead on back-to-back treys by Jordan Bykstra and Carlson and held on for the win.

Huff scored 30 points for North Dakota.
