Mitchell's Sudbeck, Waddell win events in Sioux Falls
SIOUX FALLS — The Kernel track and field team was led by Abby Sudbeck on a busy day in Sioux Falls.
The junior won the shot put and discus at the Sioux Falls O’Gorman Invite and finished fourth in the shot put at Howard Wood Dakota Relays.
Her winning shot put throw at the O’Gorman Invite was 38 feet, 1.5 inches, while her throw in the discus was 122-2. Sudbeck improved her shot put throw at Howard Wood, by launching the weight 38-4.
“She had a very nice day,” MHS track and field coach Geoff Gross said. “Shelly Iburg also had a great day in the discus and hit her personal record. Abby hasn’t thrown 38 feet all year. But this is about the same time she came on last year, and hopefully the same trend continues this year.”
Tevyn Waddell won the high jump at the O’Gorman Invite with a leap of 5-0 and vaulted 10-0 to finish third in the pole vault. The Kernels also got second-place finishes from Naomi Munsen, Mason Carpenter and Taylor Volesky.
Carpenter took second in the pole vault at the O’Gorman Invite with a height of 12-3, while Munsen ran a time of 2 minutes, 34.97 seconds in the girls 800-meter run. Volesky leaped 16-1 for second place in the long jump at O’Gorman and finished 11th in the triple jump at Howard Wood.
“The competition at Howard Wood is so stiff,” Gross said. “The reason we go to both events is to give us the best of both worlds. It is a bit of strain on the coaches and the athletes. It takes some effort and logistics to get the kids going to where they need to be, but in the long run, it gives the kids the most opportunity.”
Mitchell’s Ben Prill took 15th in the boys triple jump at Howard Wood with a jump of 41-0. Ellie Rew and Emma Schmidt also reached the finals in the 100-meter hurdles and the 400-meter dash at Howard Wood. Rew was the fifth-best qualifier with a time of 15.34, while Schmidt was the eighth-best qualifier with a time of 1:01.42. Both Rew and Schmidt compete today in the finals of their events.
