Mitchell's Rew among six area individuals, two relays crowned at state meet
SIOUX FALLS -- Mitchell’s Ellie Rew took Mitchell’s lone state championship Saturday at the Class AA state track meet at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls.
The junior won the girls 100-meter hurdles in a time of 14.89 seconds for her first state championship. She also placed seventh in the 300-meter hurdles for the Kernels.
Abby Sudbeck took seventh for Mitchell in the shot put, while teammate Shelly Iburg placed eighth.
Chamberlain’s Hudson Priebe finished his stellar high school track career with a pair of hurdle titles.
Priebe, a Drake University signee, started his day with a first-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.80. He added a championship in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 39.04 seconds.
Jase Kraft wrapped up his strong weekend with a third state title Saturday to add to the pair he won Friday. The senior, who will run at the University of Sioux Falls next year, won the 1,600-meter run. He nearly broke a 26-year state meet record, collapsing at the finish with a time of 4 minutes, 19 seconds. His time was 18 seconds better than the rest of the field and less than a second off record pace.
Kole Heller, of Platte-Geddes, won the boy 100-meter dash in a time of 11.11 seconds. He added a third place finish in the 200-meter dash.
Freeman senior Brennan Schmidt won the 400-meter dash in Class B championship with a time of 50.02 seconds. Schmidt added another title as a part of the Flyer 1,600-meter relay team with a time of 3:33.48. The other members of the team included senior Tristan Ashwell, junior Cody Roth and junior Cole Paulson.
The Corsica/Stickney boys 400-meter relay team topped the field in the Class B finals. The team of junior Kruz Knudson, junior Austin Tilton, sophomore Eli Van Roekel and senior Mason Van Vuuren finished in a time of 44.82 seconds.
