Mitchell’s Macy Miller has repeatedly dominated her opponents as a senior.

With her stellar play during her final season with the Kernels, Miller has added to her list of accolades by being named the South Dakota Gatorade Player of the Year, it was announced Thursday.

“It’s a little more special because it’s all of South Dakota and only one person can win it,” Miller said about receiving the honor for the first time.

The senior guard averaged 30.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, 4.8 steals and 3.7 assists while shooting 92 percent from the free-throw line this season. She helped Mitchell to a fourth consecutive state tournament appearance and a 21-1 record heading into the end-of-the-year tournament.

“With her work ethic and her basketball savvy, it’s just another step in her career that is well-deserved,” Mitchell head coach Wes Morgan said. “She’s done a ton of work to get to this point.”

The Gatorade company in collaboration with USA Today High School Sports honors the nation’s best high school athletes annually. The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence and high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court.

“Macy Miller is one of the best players I have ever watched play high school girls basketball in the state of South Dakota,” said Mark Stadem, head coach at Brandon Valley High, in a press release. “If she had wanted, she could have scored at least 50 points each time she played us, but she is not that type of player. She is more concerned with winning and keeping her teammates involved.”

Miller is the second consecutive Mitchell High School girls’ basketball player to win the Gatorade Player of the Year award after Kerri Young earned it last year. The two will be reunited again next year as both will be playing for the South Dakota State University women’s basketball team.

Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year award announced in March, Miller joins an elite alumni association of past state girls’ basketball award-winners.

Miller is the fourth Kernel to receive the Gatorade award, following Young (2012-13), Jeana (Hoffman) Krome (2003-04) and Jenna (Hoffman) Kubesh (2002-03). Mitchell Christian’s Jill (Young) Sargent won the award in the 2006-07 season.

Miller has broken numerous records in her final year for the Kernels, including the school’s girls’ basketball record for single-season points (703) and all-time career points (1,856). She is also a two-time all-tournament selection and two-time first-team all-state selection.
