Mitchell's gas prices skyrocket above $4.
The average price for regular unleaded gas soared above $4 per gallon this week in Mitchell.
The Daily Republic recorded the price of regular unleaded gasoline at 15 filling stations Friday and found the average cost per gallon to be $4.039 -- nearly a 50 cent rise from last week's local average of $3.559. Within Mitchell, prices ranged from $3.79 to $4.39.
Mitchell's average price was nearly 30 cents higher than Friday's statewide average of $3.744, as reported by AAA, and higher than many other local averages in South Dakota, including Sioux Falls at $3.915, Yankton at $3.909 and Rapid City at $3.320.
The national average on Friday was $3.618.
The upcoming Memorial Day weekend most likely has something to do with the rise in gas prices, according to AAA South Dakota Vice President Rob Angerhofer.
"We didn't expect this much," Angerhofer said Friday in an interview with The Daily Republic. "It's a little bit more than normal and there is really no reason for it."
Angerhofer expects gas prices will stay at their current levels or rise slightly higher as the Memorial Day weekend approaches.
