It was a good night to be a Kernel wrestler.

The Mitchell High School wrestling team won both of its Eastern South Dakota Conference duals against Watertown and Brandon Valley Tuesday on its senior night.

“It was a good night for our kids and I am happy for our seniors going out on top like that,” Mitchell head coach Travis Carpenter said. “It was a team effort and all of them did what they had to do for us to win the duals.”

In the opening dual of the night, the Kernels battled back after trailing 30-0 after the first five matches — three of which were forfeited by Mitchell. The Kernels won seven of the next eight matches — with four pins, yet the Arrows held the 36-35 edge heading into a winner-take-all heavyweight match to decide the dual.

Mitchell’s Robert McCardle outlasted Watertown’s Dane Stahl 4-3 to secure the 38-36 win for the Kernels (7-7, 4-4 ESD).

The Kernels followed the first victory with a 45-33 win over the Lynx.

Alex Herrick (152), Matt Larson (160) and Chase Klingaman (220) each had two pins on the night.

Seniors Herrick, Trey Hohn, Tyson Sprinkel, Klingaman, Mitch Morgan and Preston Skinner were all honored before the triangular.

The Kernels compete in the Huron Invitational Saturday.
